Our neighbourhood castle. A vast Venetian-era fortress on the plateau above Kardamena, with walls you can walk, a chapel inside, and views across the sea to Nisyros. Guests love following the footpath that climbs from Kardamena — the sunset from the ramparts is unforgettable.

The most famous stretch of Kefalos Bay: a long sweep of fine golden sand and shallow turquoise water. Known as “bubble beach” for the volcanic gas bubbles that rise through the seabed. Sunbeds, watersports and beach bars in summer — arrive early in August.

Twin early-Christian basilicas stand right on the sand at Agios Stefanos, their marble columns framing the tiny islet of Kastri with its white chapel. This is the postcard of Kos — swim out to the islet if the sea is calm.

A shady pine forest just inland from the airport where dozens of peacocks roam free among the picnic tables. A lovely cool break on a hot day, and a guaranteed hit with children — bring some water and your camera.

A whitewashed mountain village on the slopes of Mount Dikaios, famous across the Aegean for its sunsets. Browse the little shops for honey and herbs, then find a taverna terrace before the sky turns orange over the whole island.

A ruined Byzantine castle-town that seems to grow out of the rock itself, hidden in the greenest corner of the island. A short walk up from the spring-fed café brings you to chapels, cisterns and sweeping views to the sea.

The great healing sanctuary of antiquity, spread over three terraces with cypress trees and views to the Turkish coast. Hippocrates' medical school made Kos the birthplace of modern medicine — this is the island's most important ancient site.

The island capital wraps around a palm-lined harbour guarded by the 15th-century fortress of Neratzia. Wander the ancient agora, the Italian-era squares and the waterfront cafés — a full day out, easily combined with the Asclepieion.

In the heart of Kos Town, an enormous plane tree marks the spot where, tradition says, Hippocrates taught his students 2,400 years ago. One of the oldest trees in Europe, steps from the castle bridge and the Loggia Mosque.

At the island's eastern tip, natural hot springs pour into a rock pool right at the sea's edge — bathe in warm mineral water while Aegean waves break over the stones. Magical in the evening; wear sturdy sandals for the path down.
